WELCOME (BACK)

TO LANESBORO “Lanesboro is Like Living in a Postcard!’

That’s how a resident artist recently described her short-term stay here. If you’ve lived here all your life or just stopped by for a weekend visit, you know what she means. The awesome “bluff country” beauty of this place, the captured-in-time setting of its historic downtown, its serene neighborhoods dotted with majestic Victorian homes, the peaceful flow of the Root River…yes, Lanesboro can feel like a postcard. A very inviting one. We like saying it—“Lanesboro is a great place to live, work and play”—because it’s true. We hope this 2022-2023 Lanesboro Area Chamber of Commerce “Visitors Guide” will help you explore and enjoy this “postcard of a place” even more than ever before. Here’s what you’ll find inside…

» A great place to LIVE needs a great school. Lanesboro certainly has that. Learn about our K-12, independent school on Page 35.

» Many residents of our area WORK at a great place just 40 minutes away…the worldfamous Mayo Clinic. Learn about folks who regularly make that commute for employment on Page 22.

» To PLAY in Lanesboro can mean many things—a bike ride, a delicious meal or glass of

wine, browsing in a gallery, taking in a “play,” or more. For many it means catching some fish. Learn about our gem of a full-service fly-fishing shop located right downtown on Page 14.

Special thanks to Lanesboro Area Chamber of Commerce members, the City of Lanesboro, Dairyland Power Co-op, Lanesboro Public Utilities, Lanesboro Economic Development Authority and Lanesboro Public Schools for their generous financial contributions to this publication. Thank you to those who helped provide information and edits: Kim Berekvam, Megan Boyum, Elaine Edwards, Cathy Enerson, Kristin HerringAsleson, Fred Kiel, Alison Leathers, Peter Torkelson and Andrzej Zalasinski, Jr.

FALL IN LOVE WITH LANESBORO DURING EVERY SEASON WINTER

Bringing good food to Lanesboro: Interesting produce, coffee, cheese, groceries, chocolates, and sundries.

A snowy afternoon in Lanesboro is so beautiful and serene, you may think you’ve stepped into a snow globe. As fields, trees and lawns go dormant, our streets see fewer visitors. The locals lovingly call it “The Quiet Season,” but that quiet provides an opportunity for unplugging and seeking out unique indoor and outdoor adventures that only winter can offer. With good snowfall, portions of the Root River and Harmony-Preston Valley State Trails are groomed for crosscountry skiing. Or bring your snowshoes to hike around Sylvan Park or other nearby trails. The Bass Pond on Highway 8 provides an opportunity to ice skate, and anglers even enjoy trekking through some snow to catch and release fish under the winter sun. Weekends provide time to shop and dine in downtown Lanesboro, or just kick back by the fire in your historic Bed and Breakfast. There are many extendedstay lodging options if you want to plan a workcation to accomplish projects and after work be able to easily access the great outdoors and small town winter charms.

SPRING

77 CHEESES from Minnesota & Wisconsin

201 Parkway Ave N

April’s arrival brings snow melt (or sometimes more snow), a rise in the river, bud break, awakening green colors, and the promise of warmth to come. Wildlife is stirring, and you are certain to enjoy the sounds of many birds returning north. Lanesboro is also starting to awaken, as its retail, dining, lodging and other businesses extend their hours and prepare to greet another busy season with warm hospitality and excitement. Anxious anglers are ready for the trout opener in April and a chance to catch rainbow, brook and brown trout in some of the best streams in the country. Various events like the Bluff Country Studio Art Tour and the International Festival of Owls in Houston, MN, happen in the Spring. Bicyclers arrive to hit the trails again and see which early native wildflowers may be blooming along the bike trails. Spring here also brings the season opener of live, professional theatre at The Commonweal Theatre Company, which provides entertainment and thought-provoking art as they tell their stories on the stage. A GREAT PLACE TO PLAY…

LANESBORO FISH STORIES

When it comes to fly-fishing, Lanesboro has it all. First and most important, it has fish. Lots of them. Brown trout, brook trout, rainbow trout, natural and stocked. This area also has lots of places to catch those fish, literally hundreds of miles of beautiful rivers, streams and creeks. That’s not all. Lanesboro also has the “The Root River Rod Company,” a full-service fly shop offering everything for fishermen (or women): rods, reels, guide services, clothing, equipment, and all the “flies” you’ll ever need. The Root River Rod Company is located in historic downtown Lanesboro. It is one man’s dream come true. Steve Sobieniak is his name. Steve grew up in New York but has called Minnesota “home” for almost forty years. He has

fished all over the U.S. and the world, but his special love (and expertise) is fly-fishing in southeast Minnesota. That’s why he’s in Lanesboro. “This area offers some of the best fly-fishing you’ll find anywhere,” he says. “It doesn’t get a lot of publicity, but it gets lots of people who want to fish here. In our Lanesboro shop we meet customers from east coast to west and everywhere in between.” There are good and fascinating reasons why this is such a great place to fish. Lanesboro is in the “driftless,” a unique geological formation located at the corner of four states (Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois) characterized by tall bluffs, sharp-cut valleys, and rolling hills. “Yes, we should all be glad that there’s still a place like Whalan.”

THE WHO, WHAT, WHERE AND WHY OF WHALAN, MINNESOTA The Root River State Trail is 60 miles of top-quality bike path from Fountain to Houston. Along the way it’s dotted with small towns and villages that give bikers fun places to pause and play. One of those stops–Whalan–is the tiniest; it may also be Bluff Country’s best-kept secret. Let’s learn more about it. WHO is Whalan? It’s a town with a population holding steady just south of 70, a close-knit mix of long-time residents, new arrivals, and “weekenders.” Friendly folk, all. WHAT is Whalan? A unique little village that surprises you with all it has going on for such a quiet, tucked-back corner

of Bluff Country. The bike trail cuts through the middle. On each side you’ll find fun things to enjoy, explore and eat. The Aroma Pie Shoppe offers delicious (world-famous, they rightly claim) pie and sandwich fare. You’ll also find a fun museum, the Treasures on the Trail gift shop, mini-golf, O’s Poppin Kernals, Ernie’s 1917 Filling Station, and lodging options (including the award-winning Cedar Valley Resort, Cyclin Inn, Bluffview Guest House, the Blossom Valley Inn, and whole-house rentals). Not to mention fishing, kayak and canoe fun on the Root River. On July 4th you’ll find a girls fastpitch softball tournament. On the first Saturday after Labor Day is Taste on the Trail featuring Norwegian fare. (Rommegrot, anyone?)

#ONLYINLANESBORO

Since May of 2021, Whalan also has the “Depot.” Located just yards off the trail, the “Depot” offers ice cream treats, cold drinks, candy and snacks-on-the-go for busy bikers. (A big seller? Fresh fudge from Valley Fudge and Candy in Coon Valley, Wisconsin). Artisan gifts-and-crafts and bike accessories are available, too. Housed in the 1880s-vintage original railroad depot (look for window etchings and carved initials from long-ago travelers), the Depot is open May through October.

Bringing good food to Lanesboro: Interesting produce, coffee, cheese, groceries, chocolates, and sundries.

WHERE is Whalan? Between Lanesboro (a four-mile bike ride) and Peterson (a ten-mile bike ride). If you aren’t in the pedaling mood, Whalan is easily accessible off State Highway 16. WHY…Whalan? Because with all the beautiful, relaxing and refreshing scenery in this part of southeast Minnesota, you won’t find a better spot to take that all in than Whalan. Let’s add another “W”...WHEN. When should you plan your next visit to Whalan? How about right now!

mention caves and sinkholes). The driftless has water, too, countless spring-fed rivers, creeks and streams with clear and consistently cool (50 degrees year-round) running water, a perfect breeding ground for all those trout we mentioned. There are also good reasons why the Root River Rod Company is in Lanesboro. Steve’s love for all things fly-fishing, including its history and equipment, led to him becoming an expert in bamboo rods, including how to craft them by hand. He dreamed of owning his own shop someday where he could sell used and new bamboo rods. About seven years ago his family was on one of their frequent fishing-and-fun trips to Lanesboro when his daughter spotted a building for sale. “Hey, dad, there’s a place for your business,” she said. He looked, they bought, they renovated (Steve’s former full-time career as an interior

carpenter certainly helped) and the dream became reality: The Root River Rod Company. “Pretty quickly we expanded the idea from a rod shop to a full-service fly-fishing business,” he says. “It’s gone well, we’ve seen 20-25% growth each year—even during covid. We’ve got a staff of four and love seeing people come in year-round to browse, shop and talk fishing.” What advice would he give to someone thinking about opening a business in Lanesboro? “It’s important to have resources behind you to get started and to do your research,” he says. “But I’d say go for it—there’s nothing like being your own boss and seeing your dreams come true.” Steve Sobieniak is a man who loves fishing, especially the unique

history and thrill of fly-fishing, and a craftsman who makes and sells treasured bamboo rods. He’s also a man who had a dream, and made it come true in Lanesboro, Minnesota. Lanesboro has lots of fish…and lots of dreams, too. Maybe you have a dream of creating your own business. For ideas and information, contact the Lanesboro Area Chamber of Commerce at lanesboro.com.

LANESBORO AND THE MAYO CLINIC Lanesboro is a great place to work. One reason for that—perhaps surprising to some—is located forty miles northwest at the world-famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Many people who live in Lanesboro and nearby communities work at Mayo, and our new “work world” realities are making that easier and more attractive than ever before. The history of the Mayo Clinic—rated the best hospital in the U.S. six years in a row—starts with a country doctor moving to Rochester during the Civil War, an 1883 tornado, some amazing nuns, and two brilliant sons, Will and Charlie, who also became doctors. The Mayo story continues to evolve and now touches the lives of hundreds of thousands of patients from around the globe every year. The Mayo Clinic also touches Lanesboro. Over the last years, dozens of local residents have looked to the Clinic not just for its premier medical resources, but also as a place of employment. Doctors, nurses, therapists, administrators, patient care, food services, support personnel, the list is a long one. People from Lanesboro are part of Mayo’s workforce. And they like it. Karen Moen is one of them. A longtime Lanesboro resident now living in Fountain, Karen has worked at Mayo

22

|

#LANESBOROMN

|

for the last decade. “I started as a phone operator and now I’m a concierge helping patients find supports they need while in Rochester,” she says. “I love working for Mayo. The Clinic couldn’t get any better as an employer, in my opinion.” What does she like most about it? “Wages, benefits and health coverage are good. Also, the variety. After you’ve worked here a year, if you don’t sense your position is the best fit, you’re free to explore other departments and opportunities.” Vicki Chambard Torkelson agrees. Vicki lives in Lanesboro where she and her husband, Peter, are owners/ innkeepers at the Scandinavian Inn. Vicki started working at Mayo in 2005 and retired last year after 16 years in administrative support in their office of public affairs. “I was proud to work at Mayo and enjoyed it very much,” she says. “Mayo has a wonderful reputation for caring for their patients; they care for their employees, too.” Other people say Mayo Clinic is a great place to work. (Fortune Magazine placed it on their list of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” 14 years in a row). Two new realities make it even more appealing. Due to the covid pandemic a number of Mayo employees now work from home. (Karen does that now; Vicki did that in the final phase of her job before

#ONLYINLANESBORO

she retired.) If your job responsibilities allow for it, that’s a new option. “Mayo has been very supportive in that transition,” Karen says. “It works well for me and eliminates commuting.” Another exciting development is Rochester’s enormous Destination Medical Center initiative, a public/ private commitment of $5.6 billion dollar public/private over twenty years to upgrade city infrastructure, construct new buildings, and perhaps most important, create new jobs. Lots of them. The Mayo Clinic is already the city’s main employer (nearly 34,000 out of a population of 115,000), but projections show that 30,000 new jobs jobs will be added over the next 20 years. Outer-ring “bedroom communities” like Lanesboro will certainly be a part of that expected “job boom.” Living and raising a family in a great community like Lanesboro is the dream of many people. Thanks to great jobs at the nearby Mayo Clinic that dream is reality for more and more people, and should be for years to come. To learn more about Lanesboro and surrounding communities as a “great place to work,” contact the Lanesboro Chamber of Commerce at (507) 467-2696.

In September, anticipation for the coming leaf change is seen in the way our streets are lined with corn stalks, mums and pumpkins. The Fall colors are reason alone to visit Lanesboro in October. Catch a glimpse of sugar and red maples, burr, red and white oaks, aspen, birch and other hardwood species. There are plenty of opportunities on the bike trail, hiking trails, and river as you fish or kayak to enjoy the fall colors and more than 40 species of birds that call this area home. Art, history and beauty lovers flock to Lanesboro in the Fall for the Taste of the Trail events, the Lanesboro Area Art Trail and to check out the Lanesboro Historical Museum.

A SCHOOL ON A HILL Church Hill is easy to find in Lanesboro. The highest point in town, its two classic church steeples bookend an impressive three-story brick building that used to be the Lanesboro School. Erected in 1917, that building is where local kids went to school until the early 1990s when a new facility at the base of Church Hill replaced it. Today it’s a refurbished condominium, but where that red brick building sits and what it did for so many years still tells a key part of the story of why this town is a great place to live.

that on the same campus you’ll see toddlers and graduating seniors, it all adds up to a familiar, supportive “feel.”

The old school—sitting at the town’s focal point—illustrates the priority this community places on education. School matters in Lanesboro. Always has. One of the first things its earliest settlers built was a school. When it burned down, they built a bigger one. When that caught fire two years later, despite the cost of labor and money, they immediately rebuilt it. This is a community that has never turned down a school referendum. Today the Lanesboro School— Independent School District 229—is a K-12 facility (with its own daycare) providing a quality education on a single campus to more than 400 students.

“The Lanesboro School is a small school, family environment,” Rick says. “People know each other. Students participate in whatever activities they choose—sports, band, choir—with no extra fees. There’s a strong Board here, too. I worked with remarkable members during my time here; almost 80% of them were Lanesboro grads themselves. Yes, Lanesboro is definitely a great school.”

One of the reasons Lanesboro is a great place to live is because it has a great school.

In 1987 Rick, that board, and the Lanesboro school staff created the very first on-site daycare facility at a Minnesota school. What that means, in the words of current superintendent Matt Schultz, is that “…a child can literally start their Lanesboro Public School journey as an infant in our daycare and walk across the stage as an LPS graduate steps away from that daycare center 18 years later.”

Why is it a great school? There are some practical, “measurable” reasons for that. Small class sizes make a difference. (Current ratios show 1 teacher for every 13 students.) Quality staff and curriculum standards matter. Lanesboro School students consistently score in the top 10% of state standardized tests. Opportunities make a difference—sports, music, drama, and more—round out the educational experience. Great facilities sure help. A major expansion completed just last year—the result of a $8.3-million dollar bonding bill—is making the Lanesboro school experience—being a “Lanesboro Burro”—the best it’s ever been. All of that and more goes into making the Lanesboro School a great school. There’s another intangible that can’t be overlooked. “The Lanesboro School is a family,” you’ll hear people say. The small town, the small class sizes, the fact

Rick Lamon knows that “feeling” well. Rick served as the Superintendent of Lanesboro Schools for 25 years, from 1980 until his retirement in 2005. (He also taught a class every year. “That was my choice,” he says. ‘I wanted to get to know the kids.”) He says the connection that students and staff feel to each other strengthens the school.

Another obvious sign of that is current “open enrollment” numbers. Students from nearby towns who are choosing to come to Lanesboro are nearly 35% of the student body.

Lanesboro is a great place to live for many reasons. Having a great school—a quality place for young people to learn in a caring environment, opportunities for them to grow through extracurricular activities, employment for teachers and staff, the community spirit it builds—all comes together here. You hear people talk about “Burro Pride” in Lanesboro. Even more important, you know people feel it. For more information about Lanesboro Public Schools, visit their website (Lanesboro.K12.mn.us) and/or their Facebook page, or call Superintendent Matt Schultz at (507) 467-2229.
