WELCOME (BACK)

TO LANESBORO

We’ve all been through a year we won’t forget. The pandemic took a massive toll and had an impact on everybody and everything. Challenges remain but signs of hope are emerging, and that feels great! We hope to see you in Lanesboro and Bluff Country in 2021! Whether you’re a longtime resident, a frequent visitor (we’ve missed you!), or a first-timer, there’s something here for everyone. Lanesboro is coming back, better than ever! Did you know that Lanesboro is the official Rhubarb Capital of Minnesota? That funny plant grows well here and fits this town so well—especially now. Here’s why… It’s resilient! Rhubarb is the first plant you see emerging through melting snow after a frigid Minnesota winter. That’s a picture of Lanesboro! Not only did this town survive the difficult past year, it got better! Our excellent Pre-School and K-12 school facilities underwent major expansion. Our town’s historic dam was beautifully restored. Businesses remain open, many are renovated and refreshed. New businesses—like Spellbound Atelier, Root River Unwined and Sylvan Brewing—even started. Lanesboro’s can-do spirit is alive and well! It overflows with possibilities! Rhubarb can be made into just about anything. Pies, jam, punch, syrups, cookies, relishes, muffins, even a local soda pop. Lanesboro is like rhubarb—it offers something for everybody! There is variety in Lanesboro such as biking, hiking, live theater and music, great restaurants, art galleries, winter fun, tubing, fishing, golf, colorful and creative shops, hospitable lodging, and more. It’s refreshing! Rhubarb’s unique flavor is tart, zesty, certainly refreshing, and one you don’t forget. Just like Lanesboro! People have been “drinking in” the taste of this magical little town for more than 150 years. That’s still happening today, so come get a taste for yourself!

Special thanks to Lanesboro Area Chamber of Commerce members, the City of Lanesboro, Dairyland Power Co-op, Lanesboro Public Utilities, Lanesboro Economic Development Authority and Lanesboro Public Schools for their generous financial contributions to this publication. Thank you to those who helped provide information and edits: Peter Torkelson, Elaine Edwards, Kim Berekvam, Cathy Enerson, Don Lukkason, and Fred Kiel.

RHUBARB PUNCH

From Marilyn Bunge, former manager of Cottage House Inn This punch has been served at countless local high school graduation open house celebrations over the years. It is a great way to use the extra large rhubarb stalks in your garden. We hope it adds a ‘punch’ to your celebration! 1. Wash and cut up rhubarb stalks into big chunks and place in a large stock pot up to ¾ full. 2. Add water to cover the rhubarb and boil until rhubarb gets mushy. 3. Use a fine mesh strainer to scoop and strain out rhubarb and collect liquid in a separate stock pot. 4. Put rhubarb liquid stock pot back on stove, and add sugar to taste (enough to mellow the tartness, usually 1-3 cups). 5. Add strawberry jello for color, usually ½ box. 6. Boil mixture and then cool on countertop. 7. Store rhubarb liquid in a clean gallon container about ⅔ full. Then add pineapple juice to fill up the gallon container. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve. 8. When ready to serve, add desired amount of 7Up or Sprite.

FALL IN LOVE WITH LANESBORO DURING EVERY SEASON WINTER A snowy afternoon in Lanesboro is so beautiful and serene, you may think you’ve stepped into a snow globe. As fields, trees and lawns go dormant, our streets see fewer visitors. The locals lovingly call it “The Quiet Season,” but that quiet provides an opportunity for unplugging and seeking out unique indoor and outdoor adventures that only winter can offer. With good snowfall, portions of the Root River and Harmony-Preston Valley State Trails are groomed for crosscountry skiing, or bring your snowshoes to hike around Sylvan Park and other nearby trails. The Bass Pond on Highway 8 provides an opportunity to ice skate, and anglers even enjoy trekking through some snow to catch

and release fish under the winter sun. Weekends provide time to shop and dine in downtown Lanesboro, or just kick back by the fire in your historic Bed and Breakfast. There are many extended-stay lodging options if you want to plan a workcation to accomplish projects and after work be able to easily access the great outdoors and small town winter charms.

SPRING April’s arrival brings snow melt (or sometimes more snow), a rise in the river, bud break, awakening green colors, and the promise of warmth to come. Wildlife is stirring, and you are certain to enjoy the sounds of many birds returning north. You may even catch a glimpse of a newborn fawn! Lanesboro is also starting to awaken, as its retail, dining, lodging and other businesses extend their hours and prepare to greet another busy season with warm hospitality and excitement. Anxious anglers are ready for the trout opener in April and a chance to catch rainbow, brook and brown trout in some of the best streams in the country. Other species in the river include smallmouth bass, sunfish, crappies, channel catfish and more. Bicyclers arrive to move their legs after winter and see which early native wildflowers may be blooming along the bike trails. Spring here also brings the season opener of live, professional theatre at The Commonweal Theatre Company, which provides entertainment and thought-provoking art as they tell their stories on the stage.

SUMMER All of a sudden summer is here and Lanesboro is hopping with visitors, warm temperatures, river activities, vibrant energy and pandemic-adapted festivals! We Minnesotans know that summer is the time to enjoy as many days as possible outdoors on the bike trails, hiking at Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center and canoeing, tubing or kayaking the scenic Root River. Sylvan Park is a great place to play basketball, tennis or pickleball, get some energy out at the playground, fish the pond or enjoy a picnic under beautiful deciduous trees. The Lanesboro Golf Course and Rivers Bend Golf Course are waiting for you to practice your game along gorgeous views of limestone bluffs and rolling hills. There are many front porches from which to watch the world go by and various outdoor venues to dine al fresco and delight in seasonal flavors, made-from-scratch delicacies, unique cocktails and local beers or wines. Many regular events, like Art in the Park and Buffalo Bill Days, will be adapted this year with appropriate and careful Covid-19 considerations. Visit Lanesboro in the summer to enjoy all we have to offer: natural beauty, outdoor recreation, fishing, art, theatre, history, shopping, dining and a time to truly unwind.

FALL In September, anticipation for the coming leaf change is seen in the way our streets are lined with corn stalks, mums and pumpkins. The Fall colors are reason alone to visit Lanesboro in October. Catch a glimpse of sugar and red maples, burr, red and white oaks, aspen, birch and other hardwood species. There are plenty of opportunities on the bike trail, hiking trails, and river as you fish or kayak to enjoy the fall colors and more than 40 species of birds that call this area home. Art, history and beauty lovers flock to Lanesboro in the Fall for the Taste of the Trail events, the Lanesboro Area Art Trail and to check out the Lanesboro Historical Museum.

“When art is everywhere, it changes the feeling of the downtown area.” -ERIK PEARSON, ARTIST

DISCOVER THE STORY

OF LANESBORO’S NEW THEATER DISTRICT MURAL! Big cities have big theater districts. In New York, it’s Broadway. Chicago has one, too. Minneapolis? The Hennepin Theater District. All are venues for great shows and fun entertainment. People love them and they help give those places a distinct personality. Lanesboro has a theater district, too. Smaller, for sure, but one that offers wonderful theatre and live performances in two popular and historic downtown theaters: the Commonweal and the St. Mane. As we emerge from the pandemic, we look forward to Lanesboro’s theater district once again attracting audiences from Lanesboro, Bluff Country, and across the Midwest.

A beautifully-crafted, community-painted mural is scheduled to be installed later in 2021 on the north end of Parkway Avenue to celebrate our town’s cultural vitality. Created by St. Paul artist Erik Pearson, the mural is the result of a partnership between the Commonweal Theatre and Lanesboro Arts. Pearson worked with local students as Lanesboro Arts' first artist-in-residence in 2001. Four years later he transformed the large plywood panels guarding the Commonweal’s “construction zone” into colorful murals depicting unique aspects of local life. Those murals later graced the interior of the Intermission Restaurant. Pearson designed the new Lanesboro mural on parachute-like material. It is a work that tells a story,

#ONLYINLANESBORO

drawing on ideas solicited from Lanesboro residents of all ages. More than 200 volunteers (both residents and visitors) worked indoors on hands and knees under Pearson’s direction, wielding brushes with paint generously provided by the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation’s “Paint the Town” grant program. The plan is to permanently attach the now-completed mural to the south corner wall of the Manion Law Office Building.

FIND THE STORY IN LANESBORO’S THEATER DISTRICT MURAL

The panels Pearson created tell a story using real and fictional characters based on his own research and historical photos. Here are just a few details featured in the mural. The fairy in the top left corner is on the stage, and represents “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” which was the Commonweal Theatre Company's first production in 1989.

Community stakeholders gave input on the design that honored the history of Lanesboro, representing nature, agriculture, townspeople, cultural and generational diversity, and more. The design Pearson created includes both fictional and real people from Lanesboro based on research and historical photos. In the design the two far left characters are on a stage. The six people to the right of them are in the audience. Then the two people on the far right are on the balcony. On the stage the fairy in the top left represents “A Midsummer Night's Dream” which was Commonweal’s first play performed in 1989, and she's holding the actual window of the building like a lantern. The lantern represents the “ghost light” left on when the theatres are not in use. The fairy is wearing a dress with an agricultural pattern. The next character down represents a musician as the St. Mane Theatre hosts both professional and community-based musical performers.

The audience member with the broom represents Robert Greer, one of the first businessmen of Lanesboro and the first mayor.

In the audience, the character with the broom represents Robert Greer, one of the first businessmen and Lanesboro’s first mayor. The woman above Mr. Greer represents one of the switchboard phone operators in town, and the phone line travels to each character ending in a guitar on stage. The other characters represent average community members throughout time, including a farmer, a casually dressed male, an historically dressed woman, and a young child. There are some fun details such as marquee lights in the background, a Commonweal Theatre logo on a program, and a ticket stub in a shirt pocket with details from both a Lanesboro Community Theatre show and an Over the Back Fence live radio show.

The character performing with the guitar represents the St. Mane Theatre, because it hosts both professional and communitybased musical performers.

Maybe you’ve enjoyed plays and concerts in New York, Chicago or Minneapolis. You might also be (or plan to be) a regular patron of the arts right here in Lanesboro. Make plans to check out the new mural that will help celebrate the joy, beauty and power of art in Lanesboro’s own theatre district!

The woman above Mr. Greer represents one of the former switchboard phone operators in town, and the phone line travels to each character, ending on stage, plugged into the guitar.

Whalan, Minnesota, is a small town (population 67) on the Root River, four miles east of Lanesboro. Travel another nine miles and you find Peterson. You can arrive in Whalan via State Highway 16 or do what most people do—jump on a bike and pedal there on the Root River State Trail.

But there’s much more in this tiny treasure of a town. People come to hike, bird, fish, take jeep rides, tube down the river, and enjoy a round of mini-golf. In the winter, Whalan hosts a February candlelight cross country ski event and there are also sleigh rides to partake in. There are crafts and boutique shopping to be found at Treasures on the Trail, and the new Whalan Depot has gifts, ice cream, drinks, and snacks. Whalan hosts a July 4th softball tournament and is home to Ernie’s Filling Station (a relic-filled 1917 vintage gas station) and O’s Poppin Kernels. If you want to take in a

There are excellent whole-house rentals too, including Cyclin Inn, Bluffview Guest House, and the new Blossom Valley Inn. THE PHONE BOOTH TRAVELS WITH AUSTEN, PHD

(PRIVATELY HOME-SCHOOLED DOG) Until recently the only phone booth in Lanesboro was located next to the Haugen building on Parkway Avenue. It’s a rarity and may well be the only phone booth in all of Fillmore County. The phone booth has been a source of entertainment for years. Austen feels that it’s unfortunate that such a legendary sidewalk feature has been moved to the History Center and has been repurposed as an interactive exhibit. It has a new life as a ‘Storytelling Kiosk’! The pay phone pretty much outlived its usefulness years ago, but Lanesboro is a town filled with old buildings; some are actually historic. To me, the phone booth falls somewhere between being old and being historic. Ironically it’s kept in working condition, but it’s actually never used. Most historic buildings in Lanesboro are from the pioneer days or the Victorian era. The phone booth, in gleaming aluminum, doesn’t quite fit the definition of a historic pioneer store-front or a stately Victorian B&B. But in a town where the Irish and the Norwegians rarely throw anything away (just because it’s obsolete), the phone booth has stood the test of time.

Until recently Austen and I lived in an era when most modern pay phones would accept credit cards. Not this one. The pay phone on Parkway Avenue is a relic of another era, when phones were designed to accept nickels, dimes and quarters. Austen, being a millennial, wouldn’t recognize anything except an I-phone or an Android. To him, even flip phones are ancient devices. So, what’s the phone booth to him? It’s where he would occasionally . . . . . . . ! To the many tourists who come to Lanesboro in the summer, the phone booth had actually become the most photographed building in town. It had been situated inconspicuously on the sidewalk next to a building that’s owned by the local telephone company. Like the phone booth, the building is well maintained but never used. Unlike the phone booth, the building has never become a curiosity. The phone booth became a source of amusement for a group of retired old geezers who gather on the sidewalk across the street, in front of a popular deli. In the summer they gather every day about three or four o’clock for coffee and conversation (rumor

control). Occasionally Austen and I join them for a friendly game of cards but we generally just enjoy watching people and passersby. The old geezers enjoy being ambassadors. They also enjoy being pranksters. Often, when they would see a group of tourists approaching the phone booth, one of them would reach for his cell phone and dial up the pay phone across the street. A gathering of people in front of the booth would stare at the phone inside, become confused, and wonder if they should answer the phone – perhaps to take a message for someone who had just missed a call. Once deciding that it would be OK to answer the call, they would be seen struggling to open the door. The door is a simple bi-fold door that any child can use if you push in on it at the center, but to the uninitiated it becomes totally frustrating – and funny. It would seem that we old geezers are easily entertained.

THE DRIFTLESS REGION There’s abundant natural beauty to savor around Lanesboro—rolling hills, limestone rock walls, abundant freshwater streams and fertile soil. You have to wonder, though, do the thousands of sightseers who soak in that natural beauty every year have a sense of how all of that beauty came to be? That’s quite a story, an ancient story, all in itself. The origins of our local limestone baselayer can be traced back 500 million years—before the formation of the Pangea Supercontinent. Southeast Minnesota was the base of a shallow

ice masses that inched slowly across the continents. As that happened, the glaciers melted and the gravel, clay, rocks, and silt left behind collectively became known as “drift.”

sea teaming with life. Sand, mud and sea creature fossils were deposited over millennia and compacted into the limestone of Northeastern Iowa, Southwestern Wisconsin and Southeastern Minnesota. Over time, erosion and rushing waters broke down those deposits and dissolved sedimentary rock, creating the unique Karst topography we see locally today featuring high bluffs, narrow valleys, underground rivers, sinkholes, and caves.

Sometime between 12,000 and 14,000 years ago, the last glacier moved across the upper Midwest, leaving enormous piles of drift in its wake. The Karst topography of the area stopped the advancement of the glacier, leaving it free of drift. Today, the entire tri-state area gets its name from our lack of that sediment. This is...The Driftless Region.

As the Earth cooled, much of the water on it froze into glaciers, great

THE GRAND OLD LADIES OF LANESBORO People love Lanesboro for many reasons. One reason is the area’s natural beauty: the Root River, the bluffs, the nearby rolling fields, wide horizons and verdant forests have attracted people here for more than 150 years. Another beauty in Lanesboro is hand-built—the town’s amazing historical architecture. San Francisco has its Victorian homes called “Painted Ladies.” Our town has similar late-19th century houses that could rightly be called the “Grand Old Ladies of Lanesboro.” Some are large, almost majestic. Others are smaller and more delicate. All are beautiful and deserve a closer look. Lanesboro was founded in 1869 and within a decade the town was booming. The population soared as daily trains deposited immigrants and adventurers. (Hard to believe, but more people lived in Fillmore County in those days than in what we call the Twin Cities). New shops and businesses opened almost weekly. Mills were humming, farmers and lumberers prospered, optimistic bankers eagerly lent money. Life was good and held the promise of only getting better. People needed places to live, and the strong economy meant many could afford to build nice homes. Soon, all around town, but especially in Lanesboro’s southern “Brooklyn” neighborhood, large Victorian homes were under construction.

Local examples include the Thompson House (401 Parkway Ave. S., 1870), the Habberstad House (706 Fillmore Ave. S., 1897), the Scanlan House (708 Parkway Ave. S., 1890), the Samuel Nelson House (709 Parkway Ave. S.), the Scandinavian Inn (701 Kenilworth Ave., 1892), the Vickerman House (600 Calhoun Ave. S., 1893), Anna V’s (507 Fillmore Ave. S., 1908) and the Cady Hayes House (500 Calhoun Ave. S., 1894). Several of those are “Queen Anne Victorians,” distinguished by large wrap-around porches, intricate stained glass windows, rounded towers or turrets, upstairs porches, high ceilings, and sweeping, ornate staircases. The homes were opulent, but not gaudy, wealthy yes, but with Midwest sensibility. Norwegian immigrant craftsmen left their mark in creative embellishments and filigree, both inside and outside the homes. Their new look was combined with cutting edge amenities like indoor plumbing, hot and cold running water, and electric lights. Gardens and carriage houses were common and so were servant quarters. In recent decades, a number have been converted into stylish B&Bs. As you visit this unique little town, or if you proudly call it “home,” make sure to enjoy the natural beauty so accessible here. Take time, too, to appreciate the grace and beauty of “The Grand Old Ladies of Lanesboro.”

The name comes from the “Victorian Era,” the reign of England’s Queen Victoria (1837-1901). It was a progressive time of new developments (from railroads to telegraph to telephones to automobiles) and styles, including the look of homes being built not just in England, but across North America…and all the way to Lanesboro, Minnesota.

LANESBORO:

THE PLACE TO LIVE, WORK, PLAY You know the saying, “It takes a village,”, well, Lanesboro would be honored to be your village. This little village works together everyday through volunteerism, activism, entrepreneurism, and a genuine concern for each other. Just as the whole world experienced the challenges, heartaches, and silver linings of 2020, Lanesboro did too. The lockdown happened right as Lanesboro was ready to welcome back visitors for the start of the 2020 tourist season, farmers were preparing to plant, and the school year was coming to a close. Although there were many moments of uncertainty and trying to accept a total lack of control, the community "Lanesboro is a great rolled up its place to work for a sleeves to listen number of reasons. to one another, Lanesboro has a great gather and share sense of community and the most up to collaboration. People are date science and really willing to work information, together, support each and make the other and understand that by doing so we best of an all succeed! I have such a passion for this adapted tourist beautiful little city and am so happy to have season and very my business in Lanesboro!" different year. - LORI BAKKE (Business owner)

Businesses quickly and thoughtfully changed their operation plans to prioritize the health and safety of their staff, visitors, and local customers. Three new businesses forged ahead and began in 2020: Root River Unwined, Spellbound Atelier, and Sylvan Brewing. With optimism and a strong entrepreneurial spirit, three more new businesses were established at the start of 2021: Loubelle’s Ice Cream and Sandwich Shoppe, Whalan Depot, and The Guest Hus. Visitors still came to Lanesboro in 2020, and our tiny town proved itself once again to be a sought after reprieve from everyday life and a chance to find pleasure in the here and now through outdoor recreation, art, dining, shopping, and relaxing in one of our Inns or B&Bs.

"We do an annual group rent-the-Inn bicycling weekend in Lanesboro. The quaint, historic town is centrally located on the paved bike trail system. We love sitting out on the deck with friends for a morning coffee or evening refreshments. Easy walking distance to a variety of restaurants, shops and a great little local theatre. Biking, hiking and kayaking make for an adventurous long-weekend."

GERTRUDE,

YOU’D LOVE THIS PLACE The author Gertrude Stein got into hot water by saying her hometown of Oakland, California, had no ‘there’ there. I think Gertrude would love Lanesboro. Why? Because there’s a ‘there’ here. An unmistakable sense of place. You feel it immediately when you arrive. You remember it long after you leave.

Get your copy now! “This book took me on a wonderful journey through Lanesboro and its surrounding areas. I felt like I was right there. So descriptive!”

I saw Lanesboro for the first time on a summer day when we drove here to check out a Bed & Breakfast for sale and to see southeastern Minnesota for the first time. I expected to find a quiet, Minnesota farm town. There was so much more. “It all feels like one big park,” I remember saying. When I mentioned to a downtown shopkeeper that we were looking at a B & B, he smiled and said, “You’ll be here in six months.” He was right. We had discovered the ‘there’ of Lanesboro, Minnesota. Yes, Gertrude, you’d love this place. From “Lanesboro, Minnesota,” by Steve Harris
